1,374.8 Hours Diaper Changing! Motherhood Math!

changing diapers

So this morning as I was changing the babies diaper I started wondering…

How many hours of my life have I spent changing diapers?

So I put her down for her nap, pulled out the calculator and started doing some simple Math.

changing diapers

If you figure that it takes just about 3 minutes to change a diaper and in the first year you change around 5 diapers a day… that’s about 15 minutes of our day.

(Give or take moms.. we all know there’s some times you’re not getting all that cleaned up in 3 minutes!)

So 15 minutes a day times 365 days in the year you’re looking at…. 5,475 minutes in their first year of life.

Then if you figure for the next 2 years (give or take again) you change about 3 diapers a day at 3 minutes each you’re looking at 9 minutes of your days spent on diapering.

Multiply by 730 (2 years) and you get 6,570 minutes in the second two years of their life.

Add those two findings and multiply them times 60 and you’ll see it’s about 200.75 hours you’ll spend in the first three years of their life changing diapers.

Now I have 3 kids. So multiply it times 2 and you’re looking at 401.5 hours of my life spent on changing diapers. I won’t count the third one yet because she’s currently sitting on the potty… and we are FAR away for being done changing her diapers!

So then after I finished changing her diaper I took another wipe and washed her hands, face, and bare feet before putting her down for a nap.

Wonder how much time I spend doing this too?

So here ya go.

If you figure 3 meals 1 snack and 1 for good measure (runny nose, dirt, etc) of wiping at 2 minutes a piece divided by the 8 years of their life that you’ll be doing it.

You’re looking at 29,200 minutes which is 486.6 hours. Or with two kids 973.3 hours.

Add together the diapering and the face and hand washing for 2 kids and you’re looking at around 1,374.8 hours of your life spent wiping faces and changing diapers!!!!

Now don’t get me started on giving baths, getting them dressed, preparing their food, etc. I decided I would put this number in to see how that comes out in the wash. See what I did there… haha!

Do you realize you will spend right around 72 days or 3 months of your life (if you use the full 24 hours) changing diapers and washing little faces and hands!

What a staggering number. My first thought was oh man! What will I do with all this time when we’re diaper free.

And then I thought… boy am I thankful for my husband and the way he contributes to his family!

But what came to my mind the most?

The tickling and giggling, the kisses and loves, the smiles and conversation that happens when I sit down to change a diaper or wash a face. I almost always squeeze a kiss in while wiping even the face of my son.

During diaper changing I almost always tickle or play with the baby just to see her smile. Those precious minutes are so worth it!

So bring it on 1,374.8 hours! I’m not afraid of you!

  1. Five diapers a day I think is low-balling it lol. Especially thru the newborn stage and even more if they are breastfed cause every diaper is a poopy one it seems. I babysit a now one year old and he goes thru about that much and sometimes more in the 9 hours he’s here with me. Now the other 2 year olds are going only about twice a day. They are in the midst of potty training. Well the girl is fully potty trained but she goes before nap and when she gets up and thats it. The boy is still trying but is good for 2 diaper changes in 8 hours if he doesn’t go on the potty.
